I've come across this article in the past. It appears to have been written in September 2010.

It was the 2009 / 2010 season that gave the south those huge storms in December, January, and Februrary - remember snowmaggeddon? Snowpocalypse? I spent nearly two days stuck in western Va and WV when those states declared states of emergency. I left for Snowshoe on December 18th, a Friday, from just west of Charlotte. I wasn't even to Hickory on 321 N. when it began to snow.

The National Weather Service out of Blacksburg put it like this:
"A classic scenario for a major snow storm over the Mid-Atlantic states (including Southwest VA, Northwest NC, and Southeast WV) came together for one of the biggest snow storms in our region in the last 10 to 20 years. In fact, when you consider the entire region covered by the Blacksburg NWS office, this was the most significant snow storm since January 6-7, 1996 (almost 14 years ago!). It was also the most significant snowfall ever for many locations during the month of December, and coming one week before Christmas will likely result in a "white Christmas" for many folks."
Boone received 16" before the sun rose on the 19th. Snowshoe got 36" from the storm. Unfortunately I wasn't able to strap-in until the nigh session on Sunday night.

And then there was the Feb 5th - 6th event that dumped 26" on Wilmington, DE and shut down the mid-Atlantic.

It was on the precipice of the following season the source expert makes his prediction. Perhaps he should have included 2010 / 2011.

I spent 2010 / 2011 in Colorado - an amazingly historical snowfall season. Everyday seemed like a powder. The south didn't fare badly either. Coming off of 136" in 2009/2010, Sugar recorded 130" for 2010 / 2011.

I been Google newsing a winter forecast for the upcoming season without any luck. Maybe it is too early. Maybe the record heat and dismal previous season have the experts playing a bit cautiously.

I have seen musings of a mild el-Nio.

For the sake of the economic success of our southern results, lets hope for something better than last year.

Bring on the global cooling I've had enough of this summer.

Love it love it love it. Bring it on!

Wood stoves? Check.
4 cords of wood? Check
Audi TT Quattro mit OEM ski rack? Check.

And better yet, I finally have a job that will give me time to ski! 4 days on, 4 days off.

The pattern looks much like the one I lived through as a teenager in the mountains of NC.

I truly hope we have a cold one!

I really do hate summer, pretty much always have. The all time record for 90+ degree days in columbus is 49 and we are at 41 with plenty of time to get to 49.

I don't see anything forecasted for out west. I find it hard to believe there won't be a winter.
