nice those are awesome pics.
are there many places to actually make turns in the woods or is the road (and the balds) the only place you could open up to make turns (even though the road is prob too flat)?

The woods are too thick. The road was much flatter coming down than I thought it would be. We need a good low wind storm for some good skiing on the balds.

nice work, this on my list of places to hit this year...whats the grade like on the balds? steep enough for a decent sized jump to be built? let's hope for more dumps without the wind in the future...

Haha, yes. Finishing with PN is clutch.
When a good dump comes, we need to try to coordinate enough heads to get a nice kicker built. Our first mission would be to find the steep enough spot.

I really couldn't answer the question if it's steep enough to build anything. There's a pasture off of Poplar Grove in Boone that gets some action when it snows. I noticed some jumps yesterday when I drove by.
This is that spot from a couple of years ago:

Real grandeur out there -- more of a soul trip then a ski trip it looks like
My family is in the Sylva area and I've driven the park way there and with snow the closed road could be fun but as you say the trees are really thick-- I'll be there T-giving hope I can investigate.
----oh yeah, I like the short skins, what are they, how do they do?

Black Diamond Kicker skins. They do really well. Meant for short side country type tours. Very little slippage and they glide pretty good.
Yeah, it was more of a "I just want to get out in the snow on skis" type of thing. The AT with a lot of snow would be tons of fun downhill for a x-country or tele skier.
