Default 2014 Ski Southeast Summit Talk

If you read the First Trax report this morning, you'll see that Tim talked about Summit info for this year.

http://www.skisoutheast.com/articles...type=firsttrax

It looks like we will be doing Canaan this year. I've never been, but I'm pretty stoked. What are your thoughts?

3 things..

1. I want to go to Canaan (when there's fresh)

2. Feb 21-23 should be the date (and hopefully there's fresh)

3. Did he not mention that Beech Winterfest is happening this weekend?

I'm definately intrigued by the change. Its been years since I've skied CV and never skied TL. However I've spent almost every summer vacation of my life in CV so I know the area quite well.Plus it could be a lot easier on my wallet than SS.

Look forward to more details on date, lift/lodging discounts, etc. But honestly I'm just thrilled to hear some talk of it. Thanks guys!!

Feb 28 - March 2 is prefect for us, we can't do Feb 21 - 23, -we'll be at Breck.
Never been to CV but if the summit is on a weekend when we're not already booked I'm in.

I'll bring a keg or two of craft beer in exchange for lifts/lodging. Maybe a case of wine too.

Hmmm, not loving that I have a Snowshoe pass but other than that I really like CV/Timberline. If the deals & timing work then we'd probably give it a shot. Already planning for last weekend of Feb due to friend's work schedule but we'll see what happens.

It's a seriously bad idea

seriously

I love Canaan, and have skied there more than most people on the board. But it is (bless them) more dependent on natural snow than any other place in the SE, and when it's dry it is VERY dry

It's also a long *** drive for our southerly based population.

I don't love snowshoe but it is the best and most reliable overnight summit site --methinks mike and tim should rethink, when Skinc worked with Snowshoe the summits were great -- is it impossible to get the discounts there now.

--------------

If enough people could make it up to CV it would be fun but I expect attendance would be sparse

I wouldn't expect to get into the trees much -- WG daily report pic:

It is going to get cold again midweek

I would be very, very interested in CV the weekend of the 21-23 of February. Yeah, the ground is 100% brown right now, but that happens EVERY winter at some point after off-piste was at least somewhat filled in. The proposed weekend is still just over 40 days away and by then things could be fully filled in, I hope.

I am down for w/e, just sayin... But realistically Shoe is just a better place for Summit. I love CV, and it is great when its fresh, but nothing much has happened there this season. CV weather can be very unpredictable. I have been burnt quite a few times by booking in advance, just to show up and wish I would have just stayed in NC...

The end of Feb generally ends up getting a dump, and that makes the Canaan Resort slopes/ trees great! However, without a nice dump, I feel that the cons (long trip, commuting between slopes and town, etc...) out-weigh the pros.

The main problem that I see w/ CV summit v/s Shoe, is that; At Shoe, everyone is spread out within 'relative' walking distance of bars/gathering places. There is the shuttle bus as well, for all those making merry. With CV, it's probable that everyone will be staying miles away, and there really isn't a place to meet. Timbers Pub is about it unless everyone drives to Davis or Thomas, and I have seen it close early.

The big down side to Shoe is the pricing, but if deals can be worked up like some of those in the past; the high cost becomes a moot point.

Don't get me wrong, I am defiantly not talking up Shoe. I am just saying for a "pre-planed month out" Summit Meet. I would def put my $ on Shoe for consistency alone. Especially if we are talking the first week in March, that has seemed the norm.
